Ambrose got a forged two-leaf swing gate across a 14 ft opening between limestone pillars in Clarksville, an estimated $6,800 to $8,000 project that typically took 2 to 3 days on site. Ambrose owns an older stone cottage under big oaks, with a narrow concrete drive and no gate to stop street parking across it. We kept the picket tops under the arched rail, in hand-forged iron with scrollwork, and laid the post holes out away from the oak roots.

Clementine got a plain walk gate for a 3.5 ft walk opening in a dry-stacked wall on the Barton Creek Greenbelt side, an estimated $950 to $1,400 job that typically took 4 to 8 hours. Clementine has a hillside ranch house with a stone garden wall and a gap at the path where deer and dogs walked through. We built it in flat-bar steel, powder coat finish, tied steel posts into the stone and fitted a mechanical latch.

Why Open Iron Beats a Solid Panel on an Austin Lot

Open-picket iron wins on most Austin lots because the city counts it as an ornamental fence, and the height limits for other fence types do not apply to ornamental fence. Austin calls anything over 20% solid material a solid fence, and a solid fence on a property line stops at 6 ft from natural grade, 7 ft where the grade changes 1 ft or more, and 8 ft on or within setback lines. Our infill runs 3.5 to 3.875 inches clear between pickets, so an Austin gate stays open.

A solid fence on a corner lot also needs Austin Transportation and Public Works approval, which is why we start corner layouts in open iron. Ask Austin Development Services for the front-yard height at your address before the layout is final, and we draw to what that office tells you.

Permits and Spear Tops on an Austin Fence

An Austin fence needs a permit in three cases: it stands in a floodplain at any height or in any material, it rises over 7 ft at any point, or it rises over 6 ft on residential property along City right-of-way. That last case also needs a City letter of authorization and a Board of Adjustment variance, so a tall street-side run gets its paperwork on the calendar before we order steel.

Spear tops are out on a fence built after July 31, 2023, because the code bars spiked pickets and decorative spikes above the top rail, along with pickets above the rail spaced over 2 inches and under 9 inches. We offer spear, triad, flare, fleur-de-lis or flat-top finials, chosen per lot and per city rule, and on a new Austin fence that choice lands on a flat top or an arched rail with every picket ending at or under it. Replacing over 50% of a fence's length brings the whole fence into compliance, so we measure the entire run before we price a repair on an older spear-top line.

Old Oaks, Meters and Austin Post Holes

Austin post holes get laid out around the tree first, because a listed species, all oaks, pecans and bald cypress among them, counts as a heritage tree at 24 inches or more, and a protected tree is 19 inches or more at 4.5 ft. Digging that may disturb the critical root zone calls for a Tree Ordinance Review Application. We use posts set 24 to 36 inches deep in concrete, sized to the soil on the lot. If a hole would land inside that zone, we move the post or change the gate.

Fence lines also have to leave utility meters and wastewater cleanouts clear, and both go on our layout at the first visit. Austin's housing splits the work in two: 28% was built before 1980 and 43% in 2000 or later (ACS 2024 5-year). Old cottages and hillside ranch houses bring big trees and stone, while new infill brings narrow side yards where the gate has to fit the room left.

Knox Hardware on an Austin Gate

A Knox key switch or padlock belongs on any Austin gate that makes access difficult, because the Austin Fire Department requires Knox products there. The department does not install, relocate or repair them, so the owner or the contractor orders and mounts the hardware. We mark the switch on the drawing, beside any video intercom, keypad or phone entry with delivery codes.

Austin Gate and Fence Costs

An automated two-leaf swing entry in Austin is typically estimated at $4,000 to $8,000 and a forged iron fence at $85 to $130 a linear foot, with scrollwork, opening width and the tree-clear layout moving the price most.

The median owner-occupied home value in Austin is $555,300 and the median household income is $93,658 (ACS 2024 5-year). With 43.4% owner-occupied, a rented house needs the property owner's sign-off.

Iron and Steel Materials for Austin Gates

Most Austin owners with an older house choose forged iron gates and carry the line with wrought iron fencing along the street. Every Austin frame uses G90 hot-dip galvanized tube on posts and hollow rails so rust cannot start from the inside. On an Austin hillside lot, rackable panels follow a slope; steps are used where the grade is too steep to rack.

How an Austin Gate Install Works

Our estimator walks the lot and marks trees, meters, cleanouts and grade. You approve a drawing with every post hole on it, once any permit or tree review it needs is answered. After free Texas811 marking, we fabricate in our shop and set the posts. Last, the crew hangs the leaf, mounts 24V DC continuous-duty operators sized to the leaf, and tests monitored photo eyes plus edge sensors on every automatic gate by blocking the path and watching the leaf back off.

Austin Gate Questions

Is open wrought iron exempt from Austin's fence height limits?

Yes for the height limits on other fence types, because iron with no more than 20% solid material and an open design counts as ornamental.

Can I put spear tops on a new Austin fence?

No, a fence built after July 31, 2023 cannot carry spiked pickets or decorative spikes above the top rail.

What front-yard fence height does Austin allow?

Austin Development Services gives that answer for your address, so ask the office before the layout is final and we draw to its reply.

Can you dig post holes near my big oak?

Yes, after we lay the holes out away from the roots, since an oak of 24 inches or more is a heritage tree.

Do I need Knox hardware on my Austin gate?

You need it where the gate makes access difficult, and you or your contractor mounts it.

How much does a gate cost on an Austin hillside drive?

On a hillside drive, a cantilever gate clearing a wide or sloped entry is typically estimated at $6,000 to $10,000.
