Beatrix's stone courtyard wall in Georgetown's Old Town Overlay had an open gap at the front walk, and visitors could not find the door behind it. We built a 4 ft arched open picket walk gate on ball-bearing hinges, with a keyed latch and the steel anchored to the existing masonry. The job took an estimated 5 to 8 hours on site and sat in an estimated range of $1,100 to $1,500. Guests can now see the front door through the pickets, and the courtyard closes with one latch.

How Much Does a Courtyard Entry Gate Cost in Georgetown?

A courtyard walk gate is typically estimated at $600 to $1,500 in Georgetown, and the height, the arch and the anchoring into the wall set where yours lands in that range. A plain square-top gate in a level opening sits near the low end. An arched head, scrollwork or a jamb that needs new steel to meet crooked stone pushes it toward the high end.

Arched, Square or Paired for a Courtyard Opening

An arched gate suits a stone wall and a Mediterranean or Hill Country front, a square top suits a modern front, and a paired gate suits an opening too wide for one leaf. Width decides this before style does, because a single leaf that is too wide pulls on its hinges every time it swings.

StyleBest forWhat to weigh
Arched single leafStone walls and a formal arrivalThe arch has to match any arch already in the wall
Square-top single leafModern fronts and tight openingsSimple shape, so the proportions show every error
Paired leavesWide openings and moving furniture throughTwo sets of hinges and a center stop to line up

How We Anchor a Gate to a Masonry Wall

We fasten a courtyard gate to the structure behind the stone, because a hinge bolted only into a veneer loosens over time. First we find out whether the wall is solid masonry, block with a stone face, or a thin veneer on framing. Solid walls take sleeve or epoxy anchors drilled into sound material, away from weak mortar joints. A veneer wall usually needs a steel post set beside it, so the wall carries none of the swing.

Limestone adds its own step, because a chipped face is hard to patch so it blends. We drill slowly, keep bits sharp and protect the walk under the opening. On Blackland clay in Georgetown and Round Rock a wall can shift a little with the seasons, so we leave a clearance that lets the gate keep latching as the opening moves.

Keeping the Door in View and Guests Oriented

The door should stay visible from the street, because a visitor who cannot see an entry stops at the gate and calls. Open pickets on an ornamental walk-through gate do this best, and powder-coated steel, laser-cut panel infill gives privacy at the cost of that view. We walk the path with you, stand where a guest would stand, and check where the eye lands before we draw the gate.

The latch matters just as much as the look. A keyed latch suits a home where only family and invited guests come through. A keypad suits a home with regular deliveries, a cleaner or a dog walker. For a gate far from the door, an intercom lets you answer from inside, and our gate access control page covers those options.

Mistakes We Correct on Courtyard Gates

The most common fault we repair is a gate hung on a wall that could not hold it. Here are the others we see in Georgetown and Leander courtyards:

  • A gate sized to the opening at the top only, which binds where the wall leans.
  • Steel left unprimed on the back side, where rust starts out of sight.
  • A latch set where it can only be reached from outside, which traps a guest in the courtyard.
  • Walk gates swinging out over a step, which is awkward with bags in hand.

A homeowner in a deed-restricted community should also check with the association before ordering, because a visible front gate often needs approval first, and Steiner Ranch owners file an Architectural Modification Application for this kind of change.

What Every Courtyard Gate Includes

Steel gauge
Posts of 11-gauge to 3/16-inch, rails of 14-gauge and pickets of 16-gauge.
Picket gaps
3.5 to 3.875 inches clear between pickets, topped with spear, triad, flare, fleur-de-lis or flat-top finials, chosen per lot and per city rule.
Corrosion protection
G90 hot-dip galvanized tube on posts and hollow rails so rust cannot start from the inside, with gate catchers and positive travel stops on every swing and slide leaf.
Finish
Multi-stage wash, zinc-phosphate primer and electrostatic polyester powder coat, 3 to 5 mils thick, backed by our 3-year workmanship warranty covering welds, hinge alignment, sag and travel.
Hardware
Ball-bearing barrel hinges sized to the leaf weight and a keyed latch, with 2 to 3 inches of clearance above lawn grade, less over paved drives.

Walk Gates We Have Built in Walls Like Yours

Clementine's job on the Barton Creek Greenbelt side in Austin is the closest match to a garden courtyard, because a 3.5 ft walk opening in a dry-stacked wall took flat-bar steel with the wall left as it was. Aurelio's 4 ft walk gate in a stucco side-yard wall at Sun City Texas needed approval from both the Modifications Committee and the city, and it went in with no change orders. Marguerite's 140 ft run with an arched walk gate on the Lake Pflugerville side shows how an arch can carry over from fence to gate. Rosalind's 8 ft arched entry door in Rollingwood is the piece to study if your courtyard leads straight to an iron door, since the door and the gates share one finish. Ambrose in Clarksville has a 14 ft opening between limestone pillars, and that stonework set the pattern of the hand-forged iron with scrollwork. Bernadette, also in the Old Town Overlay, kept her 60 ft front and side run open to the street, so a courtyard gate on her block would read as part of that line.

Courtyard Gate Materials and Matching Work

Choose galvanized steel, black powder coat for a crisp, modern line, and choose hand-forged wrought iron when the courtyard calls for forged scrolls and cast detail. Our steel gate material guide explains galvanizing and powder coat, and our wrought iron gates page covers forged ornament and rust care. A courtyard gate looks best when its finish matches the railing on the front steps, so a 3 to 5 mil powder coat in one color can tie them together.

Why Georgetown Owners Call Us for Courtyard Work

Across 1,412 projects, we have found that a courtyard gate almost never fails at the steel, and almost always fails where the steel meets the wall.

Courtyard Gate Service Areas Around Georgetown

We install courtyard gates across a 45-mile radius, including Round Rock, Leander and Steiner Ranch. West Lake Hills owners tend to have stone terraces that need careful drilling, while Round Rock owners more often have block walls with a stone face. Sunset Valley and Rollingwood properties can have tighter front setbacks, so we measure the swing before we choose a hinge side.

Related Gate Services for Your Entry

Owners planning a courtyard gate often add a pedestrian entry gate at the side yard, an iron entry door behind the courtyard, or a custom driveway gate in the same style.

Courtyard Gate Questions From Georgetown Owners

How much does a courtyard gate cost?

Most courtyard walk gates are estimated at $600 to $1,500, and Beatrix's 4 ft arched gate sat in an estimated range of $1,100 to $1,500.

How long does the install take?

Most courtyard gates need an estimated 5 to 8 hours on site once the steel is built, though a wall repair adds time to the schedule.

Can you attach a gate to a stone veneer wall?

Usually we set a steel post beside the veneer instead, with posts set 24 to 36 inches deep in concrete, sized to the soil on the lot, because thin stone on framing cannot carry a swinging gate for long.

Should a courtyard gate be open or solid?

Open pickets keep the door in view and let air through the courtyard, while a solid panel gives privacy and hides the entry from guests.

Can a courtyard gate have a keypad?

Yes, and Lucinda off Williams Drive uses a video intercom, keypad or phone entry with delivery codes, which suits a courtyard with regular visitors just as well.

Will the gate rust in Texas weather?

Galvanized tube under a powder coat 3 to 5 mils thick resists rust and chipping well, including on the back side we prime before coating.
