Aurelio's home in Sun City Texas needed a 4 ft walk gate in a stucco side-yard wall, and both the Modifications Committee and the city had to approve it before anything was built. We drew an open picket walk gate in powder-coated steel with a keyed latch to match the committee's submission; the estimated $850 to $1,200 job took an estimated 5 to 7 hours. Both approvals came first, and the install ran with no change orders.

Where a Pedestrian Gate Earns Its Place

People get their own way in through a pedestrian entry gate, so a visitor with a package never needs a large gate opened. It belongs in three places:

  • A side yard, where a stucco wall meets the path, like Aurelio's gate in Sun City Texas.
  • Next to an automated driveway gate, so guests do not walk the drive.
  • A shared entry, giving residents or staff a way in that stays out of the vehicle lanes.

Gideon's 110 ft ornamental steel run in Round Rock Old Town had its walk opening cut into the same open picket line; the estimated $6,600 to $8,800 job took an estimated 3 to 4 days.

Walk Gates and Codes in Georgetown

A walk gate beside a motorized gate gets its own opening, since the Door and Access Systems Manufacturers Association states that vehicular gate operators belong on vehicular gates only, never on pedestrian gates. Separate pedestrian access is required wherever people are likely to walk in, so we quote the walk gate as its own manual leaf with its own latch and never tie it to the driveway operator. We treat the gate, the fence and the sensors as one job, so the adjacent fence is part of the same scope.

In Georgetown, the unified development code caps front yard fences at 4 ft and asks for at least 50 percent transparency, which is why a front walk gate is drawn as open pickets. Perimeter gates in Sun City usually need the Modifications Committee and a city permit, and Neighborhood 38 requires gates to common or drainage areas to open inward to the owner's property. Texas 811 must be notified before anyone digs a post hole.

Our Walk Gate Process, From Post to Latch

Because a walk gate puts its entire weight on a single post, the footing and the frame determine whether it sags. Here is the sequence we follow:

  1. Measure: the walk, the grade, the fence line and the driveway gate pattern all get checked.
  2. Set posts: posts go 24 to 36 inches deep in concrete, sized to the soil on the lot, and the concrete cures before anything hangs.
  3. Build: the shop welds the corners from G90 hot-dip galvanized tube, primes it with zinc-phosphate, then applies electrostatic polyester powder coat at 3 to 5 mils thick.
  4. Hang and tune: on site we set the latch height and the stop, then confirm the gate latches from any position.

The Blackland clay east of I-35 holds water and moves, while the limestone shelf to the west stops a hole short, so we check the ground on site before we quote the footing.

Latches, Keypads and Pool Gates

For a side yard, a keyed latch works; for a front walk with regular visitors, a keypad latch; and for a gate that sits far from the door, a gate access control and intercom system.

A walk gate that forms part of a pool barrier follows firmer rules. Texas Health and Safety Code 757.004 says a pool yard gate must close and latch on its own, have hardware that can lock, and swing outward, away from the pool yard, with the latch at least 60 inches above the ground except under listed conditions. Section 757.003 requires an enclosure at least 48 inches tall with a 4 inch sphere limit under it. Our pool fencing uses pool code aluminum, estimated at $30 to $45 a linear foot.

Choosing the Right Walk Gate

Quinn in Rollingwood and Octavia off Bee Cave Road both matched a walk gate to an existing driveway leaf, one 14 ft and one 16 ft, so we draw each walk gate to follow the leaf already standing.

Pedestrian Gate Materials and Finishes

A powder-coated galvanized steel walk gate is our standard, because it can match almost any existing steel gate, and our steel gate installation page covers the full range of leaves it can match. The finial is chosen per lot and per city rule, from spear, triad, flare, fleur-de-lis or flat-top, and when a driveway gate is already there, the powder coat color is copied from it.

Why Georgetown Owners Choose Us for Walk Gates

A small gate gets the full fabrication treatment here, with the same shop welds as Delphine's 14 ft double leaf near the Old Town Overlay and Kasper's 18 ft double leaf in Serenada Country Estates. After 11 years and 1,412 projects, the pattern holds from Williams Drive to Lost Creek Boulevard: when a small gate sags, the footing is almost always the problem, not the hinge. Ulysses off Lost Creek Boulevard did not know which deed restriction applied, so we pulled the section's restrictions before drawing his 12 ft double leaf, and a walk gate gets the same check.

Pedestrian Gate Service Areas

Our pedestrian entry gates reach a 45-mile radius of the Georgetown shop, including Cedar Park walk gates, Round Rock side yard gates, Leander entries and Serenada acreage lots. The service area page also lists Steiner Ranch, West Lake Hills, Rollingwood, Volente, Lost Creek and Sunset Valley.

Related Gate and Entry Services

On the same property, a walk gate often pairs with an automatic driveway gate, with ornamental iron fencing along the front, or, where staff need access apart from the vehicle lanes, with commercial gate systems. A walled front garden usually calls for a courtyard entry gate instead.

Pedestrian Gate Questions From Georgetown Owners

How much does a pedestrian entry gate cost?

Expect an estimated $600 to $1,500 for each gate for a custom steel walk gate, and the written quote confirms it after the walk is measured.

Can you match my existing driveway gate?

Yes. For Delphine's 14 ft double swing gate near the Old Town Overlay, we copied the open picket pattern and black powder coat onto her walk gate, and any gate inside our 45-mile radius gets the same treatment.

Should a property with an automated driveway gate also get a walk gate?

A vehicle operator is never meant for pedestrians, so we recommend a walk gate; Kasper's 18 ft double swing in Serenada Country Estates keeps a separate walk opening beside the leaves.

Can a pedestrian gate lock with a code?

Yes. A keypad latch or video intercom works with a code, the same access control work done for Cyrus on Williams Drive in an estimated 5 to 7 hour retrofit.

How fast can a pedestrian gate go in?

Hanging one finished gate needs an estimated 4 to 8 hours on site.

Do I need approval for a walk gate in Sun City?

Usually yes. Perimeter work in Sun City takes the Modifications Committee and a city permit, and we draw to both before building.
