Horace's modern limestone home near Cypress Creek and Brushy Creek Road in Cedar Park had a picket gate that looked out of place and left parked cars in plain view of the street. We built a 16 ft horizontal slat slide gate on a steel frame, with the slat gaps drawn to line up with the mortar courses on the columns. The project took an estimated 2 to 3 days and sat in an estimated range of $3,400 to $4,900. The drive is now screened from the street, and the slats read as one line with the house.

How Much Does a Horizontal Slat Gate Cost in Georgetown?

A horizontal slat driveway gate on a slide track is typically estimated at $1,500 to $5,000 in Georgetown, and the opening width, slat material and privacy level set where yours lands. Tighter slat spacing takes more material and more welding, so a privacy gate costs more than an open one of the same width. A cantilever frame costs more again, and is typically estimated at $6,000 to $10,000 where a steep or uneven drive cannot take a ground track.

Aluminum, Steel or Cor-Ten for Slats

Aluminum is the usual slat choice for a moving gate, because it stays light and does not rust where a scratch reaches bare metal. Powder-coated steel, horizontal bars give a heavier look and resist dents, but the added weight calls for 24V DC continuous-duty operators sized to the leaf. A Cor-Ten steel panel fence beside a gate suits the fixed runs better than the moving leaf, and those panels are estimated at $85 to $145 a linear foot.

Slat Spacing, Privacy and Wind

Slat spacing is the choice that shapes everything else, because the gap controls how much you can see, how much wind passes, and how much the frame must carry. A tight layout hides cars and trash bins from the street but acts more like a sail in a storm. A wider gap lets some view through at an angle, and the wind has a way past. We usually mock up two gaps at full size on the shop floor, so you can compare them before we weld anything.

Horizontal slats hide more from a person standing level with them, and less from someone looking down from a hill or a second floor. On a hillside lot in West Lake Hills or Volente, that view from above can change which gap we suggest.

Mistakes to Avoid With Long Slats

Long slats stay straight only if the frame is built to support them, and this is the most common failure we repair on modern gates. An aluminum slat across a wide opening can bow under its own weight, and it can also move with the heat. We add hidden vertical stiffeners and weld or fasten at each one, so the eye still reads one clean horizontal line.

A slatted gate often weighs more than a picket gate of the same size, and that changes the opener and the hinge or roller you need. We size the opener for the actual finished weight and for the wind on a tight layout, not just the width of the drive. On a swing gate, that weight is harder on ball-bearing barrel hinges sized to the leaf weight and on gate catchers and positive travel stops, which is one reason we steer most wide slat gates toward a slide or a cantilever gate.

Check the Rules Before You Choose a Solid Look

A tight slat layout can run into local rules, so check them for your exact lot before you choose it. Cities and associations in our area treat a mostly solid front gate differently from an open one. A Steiner Ranch owner files an Architectural Modification Application with the association before a change like this. Quinn's Rollingwood street job shows the same limit, because that 14 ft double leaf had to meet the front-yard rules on openness, so a laser-cut panel did the screening. Thaddeus on the FM 1825 (Pecan Street) side kept the sight line at the street clear on a 16 ft side drive, which is what we check first on any corner lot.

What Every Slat Gate Includes

Frame
Galvanized tube with aluminum slats, powder coat, or a steel frame with horizontal-bar infill, sized for the finished weight of the gate.
Finish
Multi-stage wash, zinc-phosphate primer and electrostatic polyester powder coat, 3 to 5 mils thick, over G90 hot-dip galvanized tube on posts and hollow rails so rust cannot start from the inside.
Slat layout
A scale drawing with the gaps lined up to your house before we cut.
Stiffeners
Hidden vertical supports so long slats hold a straight line.
Warranty
Our 3-year workmanship warranty covering welds, hinge alignment, sag and travel, and gate operators carry the maker's parts warranty, usually 1 to 5 years on motors and boards; aluminum fence panels usually carry a limited lifetime finish warranty from the maker.

Linear Gates We Have Built Around Central Texas

Florence's 16 ft slide leaf on the Cypress Creek side of Cedar Park is the nearest match to a slat gate, with a steel frame with horizontal-bar infill on a narrow side drive with no room for a swing arc. Thaddeus used powder-coated steel, horizontal bars between cedar fence runs in Pflugerville, and that drive now closes with a remote. Edmund's 20 ft cantilever in the RM-1431 and Whitestone corridor shows why a sloped drive skips the ground track altogether, because a swing leaf would have hit the grade. Harriet's 26 ft cantilever near Old Settlers Park in Round Rock carries a shared truck entrance, so a slat frame at that span is well within what our shop builds.

Slat Gate Materials and Matching Fence Work

Keep the same slat line running across the gate and the fence, because a break between them is the first thing the eye catches on a modern front. Our steel gate material guide explains galvanizing and powder coat for the frame, and a 3 to 5 mil coating is what we put on the slats too. Where a fence needs to do more than screen, our security fencing page covers taller, harder-to-climb layouts.

Why Georgetown Owners Choose Us for Slat Gates

Across 1,412 projects, we have learned that clean lines depend on the drawing, so we settle the gaps on paper and on the shop floor first.

Slat Gate Service Areas Around Georgetown

We install slat gates across a 45-mile radius, including Cedar Park, West Lake Hills and Rollingwood. Cedar Park drives are often level enough for a ground track, while West Lake Hills and Volente drives often slope and need a cantilever frame. Round Rock owners on Blackland clay ask us about footings, because that soil moves with the seasons and a track has to stay level.

Related Driveway Gate Services

Owners planning a slat gate often compare it with custom driveway gates in other styles, or add a sliding gate at a second entry. If you need new posts and footings first, our driveway gate installation page covers that site work.

Slat Gate Questions From Georgetown Owners

How much does a horizontal slat gate cost?

Most slat slide gates are estimated at $1,500 to $5,000, and Horace's 16 ft gate in Cedar Park sat in an estimated range of $3,400 to $4,900.

How long does a slat gate take to install?

Most slat slide gates need an estimated 2 to 3 days on site, and that is what Horace's 16 ft horizontal slat slide gate in Cedar Park took.

Are horizontal slat gates fully private?

They can be close to it with tight gaps, but some view usually remains at an angle or from above, so we mock up the gap with you first.

Do slats sag over time?

Long slats can bow if they are not supported, which is why we hide vertical stiffeners in the layout and fasten the slats at each one.

Can a slat gate be automated?

Yes, with monitored photo eyes plus edge sensors on every automatic gate, a reverse test at install, and a solar panel with dual-battery backup where trenching power is not practical.

Will Cor-Ten panels stain my driveway?

They can while the surface is still weathering, so we keep runoff away from pale stone and concrete with the panel base and the drainage layout.
