Octavia has a home off Bee Cave Road where the entry gate needed its own city permit and a fire district approval for the electric operator. We built a 16 ft double leaf in forged steel between limestone columns, an estimated $6,800 to $7,900 project that typically took 2 to 3 days on site. The permit and the fire letter went in as one package, so the gate was built once.

Percival lives on Westlake Drive and had a balcony rail anchored into stone that had started to move. We field-measured a 22 ft balcony and Juliet rail in powder-coated steel, an estimated $1,800 to $2,700 job that typically took 5 to 8 hours. The anchors went into the structure and were sealed against water so the balcony drains away from them.

Octavia's entry off Bee Cave Road used forged steel with limestone columns, so the 16 ft double leaf was drawn to the stone rather than the other way round. Percival's Westlake Drive job used powder-coated steel, a 22 ft balcony and Juliet rail whose old anchors were set in stone.

What West Lake Hills Asks Before an Entry Gate Is Built

West Lake Hills treats an entry gate as its own permit type, so the application comes before fabrication. The city's fence permit application lists Fence, Pool Enclosure and Entry Gate as separate choices and asks about front yard work and impervious cover. The same form asks for elevations measured from natural ground grade, renderings, and a tree and topo survey. We build those drawings with you, because a hillside entry rarely sits on level ground. The elevation drawing is where your height gets checked with the city, so call the city for the limit on your lot before you settle on one.

Why an Automated West Lake Hills Gate Needs a Fire District Letter

An automated West Lake Hills gate needs an approval letter from ESD 9 before the permit goes in. The city's form asks for that letter for electronic gates, if applicable, so the operator choice is made before the application, not after. On gates across fire lanes the fire marshal can also require a Knox key switch or Opticom receiver, and we fit one when asked.

A staff comparison quotes the city code as asking for muted fence colors and no bright or shiny finishes, with barbed wire and sharp materials prohibited. Confirm the current code with the city. We lean to a muted black or bronze finish either way, applied as a multi-stage wash, zinc-phosphate primer and electrostatic polyester powder coat, 3 to 5 mils thick, and the color is set on the drawing.

West Lake Hills Gate and Railing Costs

An automated two-leaf swing entry in West Lake Hills is generally estimated at $4,000 to $8,000, and a forged steel leaf with limestone columns lands near the top of that range. We list the most frequent West Lake Hills jobs in the table, with estimated prices.

West Lake Hills jobEst. investmentEst. time on site
Automated two-leaf swing entryEst. $4,000 to $8,000 for each systemEst. 2 to 3 days
Single-leaf swing gate with operatorEst. $2,500 to $5,000 for each systemEst. 1 to 2 days
Stair or balcony rail in ironEst. $65 to $135 a linear footEst. 5 to 10 hours
Ornamental walk-through gateEst. $600 to $1,500 for each gateEst. 4 to 8 hours
Hand-wrought forged iron fenceEst. $85 to $130 a linear footEst. 3 to 6 days

Octavia's double leaf landed in the upper half of the dual swing range, and Percival's balcony landed near the middle of the railing range because of the stone anchoring.

A steep hillside drive that a swing leaf would hit is often better served by a cantilever gate clearing a wide or sloped entry, estimated at $6,000 to $10,000 and typically 2 to 4 days of work. A Cedar Park or Round Rock owner on flat ground rarely needs one, but West Lake Hills grades make it a regular option. A walk gate beside the drive is an ornamental walk-through gate at an estimated $600 to $1,500, and a pool-side or garden run of hand-wrought forged iron fence is estimated at $85 to $130 a linear foot.

These figures are estimates for West Lake Hills and are subject to change. The table gives a range; the site visit in West Lake Hills and the written quote that follows settle the exact price and schedule.

Estate Gate Materials for West Lake Hills Entries

Most West Lake Hills owners choose estate entry gates for the drive and iron railings for stone stairs and balconies. Each West Lake Hills steel gate is galvanized steel finished in electrostatic polyester powder coat 3 to 5 mils thick, on ball-bearing barrel hinges sized to the leaf weight. Pickets are 16-gauge and rails are 14-gauge, with 3.5 to 3.875 inches clear between pickets, and posts and hollow rails are G90 hot-dip galvanized tube so rust cannot start from the inside. Finials are chosen per lot and per city rule, from spear to flat-top, and rackable panels follow a Westlake Drive slope while steps handle grade that is too steep to rack.

How a West Lake Hills Gate Install Works

The install runs in four steps, and the crew works from a drawing the city has already seen. First our estimator walks the entry and measures from natural grade, then you approve the drawing, which goes to the city with the fire district letter. Third, we fabricate the leaf in our shop, with posts set 24 to 36 inches deep in concrete, sized to the soil on the lot, since soil depth changes from one hillside lot to the next. Fourth, the crew hangs the gate on ball-bearing barrel hinges sized to the leaf weight, mounts 24V DC continuous-duty operators sized to the leaf, and runs monitored photo eyes plus edge sensors on every automatic gate, with a reverse test at the entry, before we leave. Digging in West Lake Hills starts only after the free Texas811 marking is done.

Why West Lake Hills Owners Hire Our Crew

The crew that measures your entry builds and installs the gate, so the drawing the city saw is the gate you get. Our location manager also runs our Steiner Ranch schedule, so hillside entries and stair rails get the same safety testing across the hills. Our Georgetown shop sits inside a 45 mile service radius of West Lake Hills, and our 1,412 finished projects include a Cedar Park cantilever and a Round Rock fence run. Every swing and slide leaf gets gate catchers and positive travel stops, and a solar panel with dual-battery backup is an option where trenching power across a hillside is not practical.

West Lake Hills Gate Questions

Does West Lake Hills need a permit for an entry gate?

Yes, the city lists Entry Gate as its own permit type, as with Octavia's entry off Bee Cave Road; confirm the current form with the city.

What fence height does West Lake Hills allow?

The city sets that limit, so call the city before you settle on a height; the elevation drawing in the permit packet is where height is checked.

How much does a West Lake Hills entry gate cost?

On a dual swing gate, the typical estimate is $4,000 to $8,000, and the written quote we prepare after measuring the entry sets the final price.

Does an electric gate need a fire district letter?

The city's form asks for an ESD 9 approval letter for electronic gates, if applicable, so we request it before we submit.

How long does a West Lake Hills gate install take?

A double leaf typically takes an estimated 2 to 3 days on site, and a balcony railing an estimated 5 to 8 hours.

Do you also work in Rollingwood and Steiner Ranch?

Yes, both are covered by our standard weekly route.
