Valentina's home in Lost Creek needed a way up to a second-floor deck without giving up the patio below. We built a 9 ft rise straight stair with a landing in welded steel for the home in Lost Creek, templated at the deck edge, run along the wall, finished in a dark powder coat, and set on a concrete footing. The estimated cost was $2,800 to $5,200 and the install typically took 2 to 4 days, quick work for a 9 ft rise stair in the Austin hills.

How Much Does an Iron Staircase Cost in Georgetown?

A spiral staircase in Georgetown is generally estimated at $1,300 to $6,000, and the range is wide because rise, tread material, diameter and railing style all move the price. A small exterior stair with one landing in Cedar Park sits near the low end, while Valentina's 9 ft rise straight stair with a landing in Lost Creek came in at an estimated $2,800 to $5,200.

Spiral or Straight: Which Stair Fits Your Space

A spiral turns around a center post and needs a small footprint, while a straight stair needs a longer run but feels easier on the feet. Most owners in Round Rock and Cedar Park choose by the space they have, not the look they want, and Valentina's 9 ft rise straight stair in Lost Creek runs flat along the wall, so it takes almost no yard.

StyleBest forWhat to weigh
SpiralDecks, lofts and tight cornersNarrow treads and a steep climb for carrying furniture
StraightLong walls and wide entriesNeeds the most floor length for its rise
Switchback with landingTall rises in a small footprintThe landing needs its own posts and footing

Templating, Welding and Setting the Stair

A stair is built twice, first as a template and then in steel. We measure the finished floor to finished floor height, which was 9 ft at Valentina's deck, lay out the rise of each step, and mark the center post or stringer positions on site. Then the parts are cut and welded in our Georgetown shop, so the joints are made on a bench instead of on a ladder, and a 9 ft rise stair typically takes 2 to 4 days from drawing to install. On install day we lift the stair, level the first tread, anchor to the deck or footing, and weld or bolt the railing in place.

Footings, Rise and Common Stair Mistakes

Across 1,412 projects, the common mistakes are a footing that is too shallow, a rise that changes from step to step, and an open end that a child can fall through. We hold posts 24 to 36 inches deep in concrete on exterior stairs in Georgetown and Round Rock, and every baluster gap stays at 3.5 to 3.875 inches clear. Rise and run limits depend on the building and the city, so confirm the current rules with your city before you build. Our drawing is checked against what they say, whether the stair goes in Georgetown, Leander or Lost Creek.

What Every Staircase Includes

Steel Tubing Gauge & Wall Thickness
posts of 11-gauge to 3/16-inch, rails of 14-gauge and pickets of 16-gauge on everything we fabricate
Protective Coating & Finishing Process
Multi-stage wash, zinc-phosphate primer and electrostatic polyester powder coat, 3 to 5 mils thick
Corrosion Protection (Hot-Dip Galvanizing vs Pre-Galvanized)
G90 hot-dip galvanized tube on posts and hollow rails so rust cannot start from the inside
Post Footing Depth & Concrete Anchor Specifications
Posts set 24 to 36 inches deep in concrete, sized to the soil on the lot
Picket Spacing & Child/Pet Safety Gap
3.5 to 3.875 inches clear between pickets
Slope Racking vs Stepping Capability
Rackable panels follow a slope; steps are used where the grade is too steep to rack
Picket Finial & Security Top Style
Spear, triad, flare, fleur-de-lis or flat-top finials, chosen per lot and per city rule

Staircase Materials and Related Pages

Match the stair to the ironwork around it, as Mateo did with the 40 ft stair and porch railing in Canyon Glen, since a home's rails and a new spiral should share one finish. Our iron railings page covers the guard that rides the stair, and our steel gate material guide explains galvanizing and powder coat in more detail. Percival's 22 ft balcony and Juliet rail on Westlake Drive carries the same powder-coated steel upstairs.

Why Georgetown Owners Choose Us for Stairs

Our lead welder builds every staircase in the Georgetown shop and sets it on site in Cedar Park, Round Rock or Lost Creek, so the person who cut the steel is the person who stands beside you when the first tread goes in. Across 1,412 projects over 11 years, the stairs that last were the ones with the best footing and the cleanest welds, and our 3-year workmanship warranty covers those welds.

Staircase Service Areas Around Georgetown

We install stairs across a 45-mile radius, including Cedar Park, Round Rock and Leander. Hillside owners in Steiner Ranch and Lost Creek ask for exterior spirals most, usually with a 9 ft rise to a deck. West Lake Hills and Rollingwood owners ask for stairs that fit tight terraces with a 22 ft run beside them. Volente owners ask about lakeside decks, where a powder coat 3 to 5 mils thick resists the damp. Serenada and Sunset Valley owners ask about deed restrictions, and every town is listed on our service area page.

Iron Work We Also Offer

Owners with a new stair often add iron balconies, a custom entry door, or a matching wrought iron fence.

Iron Staircase Questions From Georgetown Owners

How much does a spiral staircase cost?

A spiral staircase is estimated at $1,300 to $6,000 depending on rise and finish, and the written quote we hand you is the final price.

How long does a staircase install take?

Spiral stairs are estimated at 1 to 14 days depending on the build, and Valentina's 9 ft rise straight stair typically took 2 to 4 days.

Can a spiral stair go outside?

Yes, because the steel is galvanized and powder coated, and the stair sits on a concrete footing, the same footing Valentina's straight stair stands on in Lost Creek.

What gap do you hold between balusters?

Each stair we build keeps its baluster gaps to 3.5 to 3.875 inches clear.

Can you match an existing railing?

Yes, since we weld the stair and the railing from the same steel, we can match the finials and finish of a railing we built earlier in Steiner Ranch or Cedar Park.

Do I need a footing?

Yes, exterior stairs need posts 24 to 36 inches deep in concrete, sized to the soil on your lot, which differs between west Leander rock and east Round Rock clay.
