A wood fence on Bernadette's corner lot in the Old Town Overlay blocked the view down both streets. We replaced it with 60 ft of hand-forged wrought iron, kept open and low near the corner for the sight triangle, an estimated $5,600 to $7,200 job over an estimated 4 to 5 days.

Gideon in Round Rock Old Town wanted 110 ft of prefabricated ornamental steel, and we sized the open run to the city's street-yard rule, an estimated $6,600 to $8,800 job over an estimated 3 to 4 days. Octavia off Bee Cave Road chose forged steel with limestone columns on a 16 ft double leaf, an estimated $6,800 to $7,900 job over an estimated 2 to 3 days.

Wrought Iron vs Ornamental Steel

True wrought iron is hand-forged and scrolled one piece at a time, while ornamental steel is welded tube that looks the same from the street and costs less. The table sets them side by side by estimated cost and upkeep.

Iron Gate Codes and Mistakes to Avoid in Georgetown

A Georgetown iron gate starts with the street. The city's unified development code limits front yard fences to 4 ft and asks for at least 50 percent transparency, so an open picket or scroll design fits where a solid wall fails. The same code allows decorative wrought iron, and it keeps anything over 3 ft and 25 percent solid out of the 25 ft sight triangle where two streets meet, which is why Bernadette's corner run stayed low and open. Inside Sun City Texas, perimeter work usually needs the Modifications Committee and a city permit.

The common mistakes are a solid panel in the sight triangle, a post set in a public easement without the city's encroachment permission, and an operator bolted onto an old iron leaf without photo eyes and edge sensors. DASMA's guidance puts at least two independent entrapment protection means in each direction on most installations, and Texas 811 needs notice before any post hole is dug. Rules differ by city and change over time, so confirm yours before you commit.

Our Iron Gate Fabrication Process

Every iron gate follows the same path from tape measure to handover:

  1. Measure: we check the opening, the grade, the sight triangle and the style you want.
  2. Forge and weld: scrolls and collars are formed by hand, then welded in our shop to 14-gauge rails and 11-gauge to 3/16-inch posts.
  3. Protect: G90 hot-dip galvanized tube on posts and hollow rails, then a zinc-phosphate primer and an electrostatic polyester powder coat 3 to 5 mils thick.
  4. Set: posts 24 to 36 inches deep in concrete, sized to the soil, on ball-bearing barrel hinges.
  5. Test: latch, stop and, for automated leaves, the entrapment test.

East of I-35 the Blackland clay holds water and moves, while west of it the limestone shelf stops a hole short, so we check the ground on site first.

Wrought Iron Gate Cost in Georgetown

A hand-wrought forged iron fence run is estimated at $85 to $130 a linear foot, while ornamental tubular steel is estimated at $50 to $85 a linear foot, and the length, the scrollwork and the slope move the price most.

Materials and Related Pages

Our shop builds in several metals, from steel gate installation and ornamental iron fencing to custom driveway gates and iron railings. Gideon's ornamental run and Bernadette's forged iron show the two ends of the range.

Why Georgetown Owners Hire Our Shop

Our owner walks the property with you before a drawing is made, and the crew that measures your fence line sets the gate and tests it. Hand-forged iron needs a scrape and repaint every 3 to 5 years, and we say so before you sign, because a finish that is ignored in Texas sun will fail first at the welds. Across 1,412 projects the pattern holds from the Old Town Overlay to Round Rock Old Town: an open, low iron run near a corner gets approved faster than a tall solid one.

Wrought Iron Gate Questions Georgetown Owners Ask

How much do wrought iron gates cost in Georgetown?

Hand-wrought forged iron fence runs are estimated at $85 to $130 a linear foot and an automated single swing gate at $2,500 to $5,000, confirmed in your written quote.

Is it real wrought iron or steel?

We build both, and we tell you which is which, because ornamental steel at an estimated $50 to $85 a linear foot looks the same from the street.

How often does iron need repainting?

Hand-forged iron needs a scrape and repaint every 3 to 5 years, while galvanized and powder-coated steel needs an annual wash and touch-up of chips.

Can an iron gate be automated?

Yes, with a continuous-duty operator, photo eyes and edge sensors we test on the leaf, like the operator retrofit Cyrus had on Williams Drive.

How long does installation take?

A fence run is typically an estimated 3 to 6 days for forged iron, as with Bernadette's 60 ft run, and a gate is typically 1 to 2 days.

Do I need a permit for an iron fence in Georgetown?

Often yes for front yard height and transparency, and Sun City Texas adds its Modifications Committee, so we confirm the rules for your address first.
